Dr.Tarzi, professor of archaeology and President of the APAA*, is the Director for the "French Survey and Excavation Missions at Bamiyan" since 2002, following the removal of the Taliban regime.

Dr. Tarzi, a native of Afghanistan, came to France at age 20 to study with the legendary Prof. Schlumberger. Tarzi went back to Afghanistan and became the Director of Archaeology and Conservation of Historical Monuments, and undertook the restoration of the Bamiyan Buddha statues that were dynamited by the Talibans in 2001.
Dr. Tarzi had through the prewar years initiated efforts to find the mysterious 1000 feet long reclining Buddha statue at Bamiyan. Dr. Tarzi, undeniably the Bamiyan expert, will give you a history of the excavation campaigns illustrated by beautiful images of recent finds and lead you in on the search for the sleeping Buddha of Bamiyan.
