Born of French-Canadian parents in Massachusetts Jack Kerouac did not speak English until he was 6 years old.

Raised in the Franco-American culture and schooled by French priests, Kerouac was immersed in his French identity since his earliest years.

Nicosia will discuss how both the positive and negative aspects of this identity contributed to make Kerouac the great writer he became. He will also discuss how the quest to find his roots dominated Kerouac's later years, leading to a trip to Brittany in 1966 that resulted in the book “Satori in Paris.”

Gerald Nicosia is a poet, historian, biographer, playwright, and journalist. He is best known for his biography of Jack Kerouac, Memory Babe (1983). In 2003, the London Times called it "still the best book on Jack Kerouac."
